If you need to work with any sort of material, especially wood, you will occasionally have the need to either shape it or cut it. Wood doesn't cut itself, so you're going to need a tool. The tool most often used to cut wood is a saw.

Saws have been around for a long time; they are known to have been used in ancient Egypt. Those saws were made from copper, which is a rather soft metal, so they likely didn't work very well or last very long. Over time, as man became better at working with metal, saws were eventually made from tougher materials, and for the past several hundred years, the blades have been made from some kind of steel.

Mass production of saws is a relatively new phenomenon, however. Even in the mid nineteenth century, saws had to be made by hand. A basic blade would be cut, but then the teeth needed to be individually filed by hand. Manufacturing saws was expensive, laborious an time intensive, and these handmade devices were often prone to breaking teeth during use. Any craftsman that had a good working saw guarded it carefully, as replacing it was a difficult and expensive endeavor.

Saws today are basic commodities that can be purchased at any hardware or department store. They have long been stamped by machine and are much more uniform and reliable than those made in the past. They're also quite affordable, and a good hand saw can be purchased for less than twenty dollars. Modern tools also include a variety of power saws, which can speed up cutting dramatically. Circular saws, table saws, and band saws are commonly found in many home shops, and each of them work far better than cutting by hand. Still, there are occasions when a hand tool can do the job sufficiently, and for that reason, a variety of hand saws are available for purchase even today. Hacksaws are well suited to cutting metal or other hard materials, and a coping saw is a good tool for cutting intricate patterns in wood or other similar material.

As is the case with nearly anything that's old, vintage hand saws are quite collectible. As previously noted, these tools were once tediously made by hand and they were rare and expensive even in their day. They were also quite prone to damage, and finding a two hundred year old hand saw today that isn't missing a lot of teeth is a rarity, and one for which collectors will gladly pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It's unlikely that anyone purchases such things to actually use them; they're typically acquired to be used as display or decorative items.

If you're looking for a vintage saw of any type, you will likely be able to find it here. We have a wide assortment of cutting tools of all kinds, both vintage and antique and we have them in price ranges that should suit anyone's needs, from the seasoned collector to the novice.
